Holidays With the Most DUI Arrests

Posted in Criminal Defense,DUI on November 14, 2019

Holidays are a great opportunity to enjoy spending time with family and friends. Many people enjoy having alcoholic beverages around holidays, and when they do, they need to find someone else to drive. Unfortunately, the holidays are typically marred by an increase in DUI arrests. With the winter holidays right around the corner, we wanted to look at which annual holidays and holiday weekends result in the most DUI arrests.

Holidays with the most DUIs

Top 5 Holidays With The Most DUI Arrests

  1. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s: This winter trio of holidays all fall close to one another and result in the most DUI arrests. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that two to three times more people die in alcohol-related crashed between Thanksgiving and New Year’s than during the rest of the year. Just this past New Year’s Eve weekend, CHP officers arrested a total of 1,140 people.
  2. Fourth of July: For single weekend DUI arrests and traffic fatalities, the Fourth of July and New Year’s weekends are usually close. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that 237 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes over the Fourth of July weekend.
  3. Memorial Day Weekend: The unofficial beginning of summer is characterized by cookouts and backyard parties. However, there is usually plenty of alcohol involved, and police often have DUI checkpoints ready. This year, the California Highway Patrol reported at least 900 DUI arrest across the state.
  4. Halloween: Halloween is not just a holiday for kids to get dressed up and go get candy. The NHTSA says that around half of all fatal Halloween car accidents involve an impaired driver.
  5. St. Patrick’s Day: This may not be a holiday that many people think about, but it is often characterized by alcohol-fueled parties. Green beer, parades, and parties all lead to a higher number of DUI arrests than most other times of the year.

DUI Checkpoint Statistics

Checkpoints are legal methods that law enforcement officials use to look for various driving infractions, including DUI. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), there were 1,148 total DUI checkpoints conducted across the state during the latest reporting year with the assistance of OTS funding. More than 1,200,000 vehicles went through these checkpoints, and nearly 10,000 field sobriety tests were administered. 2,294 alcohol-related arrests were made, and 455 drug-related impairment arrests were made at these checkpoints.

Aside from DUI checkpoints, the OTS also helps local law enforcement officials conduct “DUI saturation patrols.” Out of these saturation patrols, over 5,000 people were arrests for the impairment of alcohol or drugs.

DUI checkpoints are always announced ahead of time and have been deemed to be Constitutional by the US Supreme Court.
